Artist statement

My name is Amirah, and I'm a mixed-media artist. Though I was born in Washington, D.C., I've lived in various places before calling Atlanta home. My travels and experiences have deeply influenced my creative journey. I discovered my love for art at the age of six, and that passion for creation has stayed with me ever since.

I work in layers because that is how experience arrives — one thing over another, never fully covering what came before. Paper, pigment, texture and gold sit together on the surface until the piece settles into something calm enough to keep.

The women in my work are not portraits of anyone in particular. They are gathered from the places I've lived and the people who carried me through them.
